Concept, Contemplative Research and Presentation
by Baiju Karunakaran
On ekatma.org, we sincerely attempt to offer a free forum and the essential resources to facilitate svādhyāya (self-study) of the Indian philosophical system of Vedanta. To those who want to incorporate spirituality in their regular life, a clear understanding of a supporting philosophy will go a long way in having a fulfilling life. Vedanta philosophy declares that perfect well-being is what humans deserve and teaches what that means and how to attain the same.
The fundamental texts of Vedanta are the Upanishads (the ten principal ones, although there are many more in number), the Brahma Sūtra, and the Bhagavad Gita, all several millennia old. Together they are the Prasthāna-traya. The materials presented here are primarily thoughtful notes prepared based on the study and research of such texts and their commentaries. Beginners should find them comfortable to follow since they include ample explanations of the terminology and the essential principles.
The twenty-first century has seen so far unprecedented advancement in technological development and wealth creation. However, the constant rise in mental stress that jeopardizes people’s health is the heavy price the world has to pay. Adopting a good philosophy in life should enable us to strike the right balance between human desires and lasting mental peace. Yet, philosophy has had the least appeal in practical life.
A major factor that works against the motivation to learn philosophy is the non-availability of simple study materials. As the topics are usually complex, the uninitiated may find the available materials less intelligible.
Easy grasping of the philosophy of life is a key focus of these pages. Or, the goal of this website is to present the materials prepared and the clarity that emerged during someone’s learning struggles over a long period. The website should enable the new self-learners to progress step by step, week by week.
Lasting well-being through spirituality is the goal of Vedanta philosophy. The well-being of the world is in the well-being of every individual. Only when the world works as one family can it become a reality.
अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघु चेतसाम् ।
उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥
(Ayam nijaḥ paro veti gaṇanā laghu chetasām
Udāracharitānām tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam) [Maha Upanishad]
Meaning:
This belongs to me; that is his; the narrow-minded consider thus.
To the broadminded, the world itself is the (one) family.
If this website serves as one tiny little step toward making the world that one family, we have a reason to be happy.
